EPBD: Why do we need to invest in pre-cabling?
In this video, ACEA Senior Public Affairs Manager, Massimiliano Vascotto, reviews how the European institutions can ensure that the building sector too caters to the new mobility needs through the revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).
On 9 February the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) votes on the recast of the EPBD which integrates the notion of pre-cabling for electric vehicle infrastructure in new buildings and buildings that are under renovation. This marks a step in the right direction to allow the EV market to ramp-up and enable citizens to participate in the move to electric mobility.
“The use of cars will completely change in the future. Charging electric cars at your workplace, at a supermarket, or outside your family’s home will become the norm,” stated Massimiliano Vascotto.
The undergoing transition towards zero-emission vehicles requires a huge network of charging points, and the vast majority of these will have to be placed on private grounds. The EPBD ensure that private buildings will play their part in catering to the growing infrastructure needs.
“Pre-cabling is the concept of installing most of the physical and electronic infrastructure at a parking place so that it can be equipped at a later stage with the actual recharging station,” added Vascotto.
It is of paramount importance to invest in pre-cabling today as it would reduce later installation costs by around three times. Vascotto: “All new buildings with parking spaces should ensure that pre-cabling is an integral part of their architectural plans. Similarly, all buildings undergoing renovations should also include pre-cabling.”
“The mobility ecosystem is really undergoing a massive transition. Let’s ensure that the building sector too caters to the new mobility needs,” Vascotto concluded.
