EU car sales on the up in 2023, with electric models increasingly popular

Francesca Piazza, ACEA’s Senior Statistics Manager, provides a snapshot of the state of play of the European car market in our latest video explainer.

EU car sales surged by almost 14% in 2023, with over 10.5 million new registrations.

Battery-electric sales soared by an impressive 37% and now command close to a 15% market share.

Battery-electric models are now the third-most-popular choice for buyers, overtaking diesel in 2023.

Looking ahead to 2024, we anticipate a 2.5% sales growth, reaching 10.7 million units. Around 20% are expected to be battery-electric, equivalent to over two million units.
